Not every job is a big repair. A squealing belt, a soft hose, a brake light that's out or wipers that streak are all small problems. Each one can still leave you stuck at the side of the road or unable to see in a snowstorm.
The serpentine belt is the long rubber belt at the front of the engine. It turns the alternator, the A/C compressor and, on many cars, the water pump and power steering pump. We check the belt, its tensioner and the pulleys it runs on, and replace what's worn. Hoses get the same look for cracks, soft spots and leaks at the clamps.
For leaks, we find the source before fixing anything. A drip could be oil, coolant, transmission or power steering fluid, and the colour and location tell us where to look. Small fixes, like a hose or a clamp, are often quick. Anything bigger gets a written quote first.
Why it matters
One belt runs a lot
If the serpentine belt snaps, the battery stops charging and the steering gets heavy. On engines where it drives the water pump, the temperature starts to climb too.
Lights and wipers are safety items
A burnt-out headlight or brake light makes you harder to see, and you can be ticketed for it. Worn wipers smear salt spray across the windshield right when you need to see.
Leaks rarely stay small
Oil dripping onto a hot exhaust smokes and smells. A power steering or coolant leak left alone can run the system low. Found early, most leaks are a simple fix.
Signs it's time
- Squealing or chirping from the engine, especially on cold starts
- Cracks or a shiny, glazed surface on the belt
- Spots or puddles under the car
- A headlight, brake light or signal that's out
- Wipers that streak, chatter or skip
- Hoses that feel soft, swollen or cracked
What's included
- Serpentine belt, tensioner and pulleys checked
- Worn belts replaced to the correct routing
- Hoses replaced if cracked, soft or leaking
- Leaks traced to the source before any repair
- Headlight, tail light, brake light and signal bulbs replaced
- Wiper blades fitted in the right size
- Washer fluid topped up with winter-rated fluid
- Written quote for anything bigger
How often
Check at every oil change
Belts and hoses age with heat and time, not just kilometres. A quick look at each oil change catches them before they fail. Wiper blades are worth replacing about once a year, before winter.
